I just wanted you all to know that I can go on with my life, now that I know who killed Carmen Mesta...it was Jana!!!
And also, it is 66 degrees, warm enough for me to WANT to get out of my damn bed and shower, or get dressed, or maybe brush my hair. I may even go crazy and cook a hot dinner tonight.
One more little tidbit...I just found out that one of my very favorite high school teachers, a passionate and engaging biology teacher, has been fired for using the word "fuck" to a couple of high school delinquents who were repeatedly tormenting some special education students. He apparently wrote them up several times, and when nothing was done about the situation, he told them to "stop fucking with other students."
So in his honor, what the FUCK?
I realize that teachers are supposed to be models of responsible adult behavior.
However, what high school kid, or adult for that matter, do you know that has NOT heard the word 'fuck'? I'm not saying it was the best choice of wording, but we're not talking about elementary school, or even middle school, aged children.
Did he damage their precious, juvenile delinquent egos by using a bad word?
Would other teachers follow suit, and start swearing at students daily, if they saw another teacher "get away with it"?
Teachers are HUMAN...I can't TELL you how many times I've told my classes to, "Put your heads down! I am NOT putting up with this ugly behavior!", but was really thinking, "I'm not putting up with this SHIT!"
I've NEVER sworn at a student, or around my own children. But when you are a teacher, and you see the same students day in, day out, 180 days a year, you feel like you are their second parent. Elementary teachers often spend more time with children than their parents do - add it up.
You feel responsible for their behavior. You want to protect the kids who can't step up for themselves, and you have a drive to put kids in their place when they are uncontrollably out of line. If I was a high school teacher, dealing with students who are just a few years away from adulthood and who are the size of full grown adults, I can imagine being pushed to the point of SPEAKING to them the way I would speak to an adult bully.
So I signed the petition to reinstate Mr. C, which has over a thousand signatures and is still growing. The school board meeting is tomorrow night, and I'll be hoping it works out in his favor. I can't see how using the word "fuck" can erase decades of a successful teaching career.
Fuck.

I have to be honest...That word distrubs me more than any other word in the entire English language. It is shocking that a teacher would feel the need to use such a terrible word to reprimand a group of students...whether they deserved it or not. I would be horrified to find out that a teacher had used that word in the hearing of other students..whether the ones it was directed at were negative enough creatures to use that word on a regular basis. I do, however, understand that people say stupid things when they are angry and if the teacher on a normal basis is not one to divulge in that kind of language, that he should get another opportunity to prove himself.
I agree with what you wrote. While I don't think swearing at students is appropriate, I highly doubt that word will have a negative impact on them. With all the abuse you hear of teachers toward their children, that word should be the least of any worries.
I'd sign the petition, too...
How many "second chances" do most people get. These students were obviously given second chances. Criminals are given second chances on a daily basis. How many times do you see a repeat DUI offender? Many. How many rapists are walking the streets right at this very instant? But this man, who has been a successful teacher for years and years, says FUCK one time and he gets fired? Please. It's just a word. He didn't hit the students. Am I saying it was right? No, a teacher should be a roll model. But my goodness, he shouldn't have been fired for it. And it's not like he said "Fuck you and your mama." He told them to stop fucking (screwing, messing, teasing...it's all the same) with other students. And we wonder why kids get away with everything these days. Because all they have to do is run and tell mommy and daddy that someone said the word fuck and someone threatens to sue and the kids get their way. Teachers are scared, literally for their life, for their finances, for their job, to discipline their students for this reason. For fear that if they do, they will get fired.
I'm stepping slowly away from the soapbox.
As a middle school teacher with a fair share of "delinquents" in my classes, I know how difficult it is to remain calm and be the perfect role model at all times. Teachers get frustrated just like anyone else. I'm not ashamed to admit that I have told students to "shut up" and "quit screwing around". I don't make a habit of it and I probably say the words one time each school year, but dammit, when they're acting like little shits, those words do the trick. Plus, I always tell them that they provoked me, so there. :) I think Mr. C was being passionate (as you said he was) when defending those special education students and I'm sure the parents of the kids being picked on would gladly tell those MFers to stop fucking with their kids too.
Hear, hear under the circumstance, I cannot think of a better term to use. I have known teachers that have used language or gestures and have not been fired. One teacher gave a referee the finger in a faculty- student basketball game in front of students, parents, and administrators. He may have been reprimanded, but he did not lose his job. Occasionally, I tell my seventh graders to stop screwing around, and I do mean the synonym for fucking. Other times I will tell the students not to act like jerks. When my students are thinking bitch, I would like to tell them that is Bitch with a capital B.
As a fellow a teacher I have to both agree and disagree. Should he have used the word? NO. When doing my student teaching in a very small town I was once told by a almost 17 year old FRESHMAN that he did have to listen to no stupid women and that word along with many other crossed my mind, but, not my lips. Should he be fired for it? NO! Wrote up maybe but not fired. My question to those nice, sweet, little children picking on the special ed students would be "What kind of language did they use when making fun of those students?" I am sure it was words like oh shoot and darn-it.

I love how the worst consequences come to the least deserving. I also love how teachers are expected to put up with ungodly amounts of shit and never ever step out of line because of it.
Actually I don't love either of those things. I hate them both. I'm glad you signed the petition. Sign my name too.
I didn't even read the whole post, just the Y & R part, lol. I was totally NOT expecting Jana to be the one that killed Carmen. It's crazy! They got some pretty good writers over there! So now that Kevin and Colleen are stuck together trying not to die, do ya think they will make up and become bffs?
In this day and age, I can only imagine what a teacher in a classroom setting has to put up with....it scares me.
Sign the petition for me too!
How did I miss this post? After reading your current one, I had to go back and get the scoop. Now that I have it, I'm shocked that he was fired. And I would LOVE to know what kind of punishment those bastard teenagers got for picking on those poor kids. Anything less than expulsion was letting them off too damn easy.
