I'm blaming it on Pregnancy Brain
Laura's birthday party was Sunday, at 4:00. Before that, though, we had to get to church, where we were also staying for a luncheon.

I stayed up Saturday night until 1:00 a.m. finishing cleaning the house and getting the cake decorated. I went to bed patting myself on the back for being READY for a party for once in my life, instead of scrambling at the last minute.

When I had finished decorating the cake (Laura had requested a "Dora under a rainbow" cake), I had to go through my usual routine of hiding it from my cake-destroying toddlers, so I stuck it in the oven to 'hide' until party time. Do you already know where this is going?

I woke up early Sunday morning to put in my casserole that I was taking to church, and I hit preheat on the oven. I had not had any coffee, yet, friends.

About ten minutes later, I gasped and realized exactly what I had done:

Oh, yes. I did.

Melted the icing, roasted the marshmallow clouds, and up close, the Dora candle looked eerily similar to that creepy Edvard Munch painting:

I, of course, got the cake from the oven and immediately burst into tears. Laura and Garrett peered at the ruins. Garrett said, "It's okay mom! It's a GOOD Dora cake!", and Laura patted my leg and said, in her most sympathetic voice, "Oh, mommy. We'll keep care of you. Don't cry." Which just made me cry harder.

I ordered the children to go wake up their Daddy RIGHT NOW, and when he stumbled groggily into the kitchen and helpfully said, "You turned the OVEN on???" And then he laughed.

I put in an emergency call to my good friend Andrea, who was coming to the party, and asked her to pick up a new Dora candle. Then we went to church, had lunch, and I came home to re-bake, make new icing, and re-decorate a new cake. So much for not having to scramble around on party day.

Anyway, everything turned out fine, and it made a good story to entertain the party guests. I'm nothing if I'm not entertaining. Here is Dora - Version Two:

And now, in twenty years, Laura will be talking to her therapist and discover that her problems really seemed to start back when her crazy mother destroyed her third birthday cake.

Ah, a job well done. I've got this motherhood thing IN THE BAG, do I not?

What a story! What a great mom you are, baking the birthday cake TWICE. I would have called that friend and told her to not only pick up the candle but a NEW CAKE too!

Once again, good job, and thanks for keeping us all entertained along with your party guests. :)

Stacey, rarely do I come across a wonderful post as yours. You are a great mom and believe me, both the cakes are great! But of course, cake no.2 is just perfect! We do mess up birthday cakes, but then, what's the fun without some messing up? I wish Laura a wonderful birthday.

I am seriously lazy about commenting on the blogs I read... partly due to pregnancy but mostly thanks to Bloglines. They just don't make it easy. So I'm sorry I've been absent!

Anyways, OH. MY. GOD! I wish I could tell you that I laughed.... but this post hits way to close to home. Holy, it could have been me. Pregnancy is slowly rotting my brain. I forgot the sugar in my cheese cake, didn't realise it and then SERVED it to people. Gah.

Maybe it's something about the third pregnancy, maybe it's something about walking around in a daze most of the time, but I am constantly doing things oh-too-similar to your cake-melting experience.

I feel for you. I almost burst into tears for you. Because I know the feeling.

Congrats on coming through with another cake. Gold star for you!

I laughed...hard. I'm sorry. Really, I am. You proved once again that you ROCK :)

I cannot tell you how many times I have left something in the oven only to forget and I don't have "pregancy brain" to blame it on, lol. Happy third birthday Laura! P.S. As Kellie said, your mom rocks!

I totally laughed at that! I couldn't help it! But, I am also amazed that you were able to make another cake so quickly and it looks great!!!!

You must be a good mommy, otherwise, the kids would've been laughing along with Seth!

Oh my goodness, you poor thing. Although I have to say, I liked the roasted marshmallow touch, and your kids are so damn sweet!

Glad everything worked out okay, the cakes looked wonderful as usual, and well, I think you are an awesome mom!

I have nothing but empathy for you my friend. GAH! I would be so upset-as you obviously were! :(
But-like you said-these things make entertaining stories!
I am still trying to get over the fact that she is THREE years old. I remember you pulling me aside in your classroom to tell me the good news!! I am getting old because I am asking the infamous question....WHERE DOES THE TIME GO??

OK Stacey you just accidentally created the ultimate boy cake! I see a camping theme complete with roasted marshmallows! I would have taken the cake out of the oven to black ash marshmallows though your s were perfectly toasted!
Congrats on going the extra mile and making another cake. I would have just called it quits and bought one.
Happy Birthday Laura!

All I can say is I love you. You try and succeed at being a great Mom with a killer sense of humor. I cannot tell you how many spatulas I have baked. I love the clouds you made and have never seen them done like that. Thanks Stacey, with all the shitty news on the tube right now it's great that you can make us all smile.

I can't believe you whipped up a second cake THAT awesome in no time flat. You are supermom!

Same thing happened to me. Well sort of - my husband turned the oven on after I had told him cup cakes for Abby's 2nd party were hidden in the oven. I was out for the night and when I came home there was a plastic tupperware container and ruined ice cream cone cupcakes everywhere.

OH NO! It never fails. I'm always scrambling at the last minute. I even took off work the Friday before Dom's b-day and was STILL running around like a chicken with my head cut off on Saturday.
The cake (version 2.0 that is) looks fabulous though. You are my hero!
(And how freakin' sweet and cute are your kids for wanting to take care of you. That came [this] close to making ME cry.)
