Chaos
In my fantasies...

...I have a well balanced meal on the table every night at 5:30.

But really, the family is lucky if there are frozen chicken nuggets and french fries ready before 7:00.

...we all sit around the table to eat and share stories about our day.

But really, Garrett states nine thousand times that he's soooo hungry, then proceeds to refuse every morsel of food, and goes off to pout in the living room. Laura attempts to make up for Garrett's nonsense by repeatedly announcing, "This is DE-WICIOUS!", which makes Garrett mad, and then he is sent away, screaming, for a time-out in his room.

...I cook homemade breakfast for my family every morning at 7:00.

But really, the children have a rotating choice of frozen waffles, poptarts, or sugary cereal.

...I play at least three games with my children each morning.

But really, I spend the entire morning doing dishes, laundry, and ordering the kids to GO PLAY!!!

...I do at least one craft with my children each afternoon.

But really, I usually just fold after the kids have begged for watercolors for 4 hours straight, and let them make the most humongous mess in the world while I sit down and read some blogs.

...the kids get a bath every evening at 7:00.

But really, it's more like every three or four days, and sometimes I just wash their dirty feet in the sink.

...there is no paperwork stacked on my kitchen counter.

But really, there is an 18 inch tall mountain of crap I needed to sort through three weeks ago.

...I don't need anti-anxiety meds to make it through the day.

But really, I do. Enough said.

...my kids nap every afternoon, and I use that time to faithfully read and comment on blogs.

But really, nobody around here is taking naps, except me when I fall asleep on the couch while the kids make one of their very creative messes in the kitchen. My blog reading is practically non existent and Bloglines are glaring at me with all of their "un-reads".

...the laundry is always caught up.

But really, I bought Garrett and Laura new underwear and socks recently, because I was so behind, nobody had any clean to wear. I knew I'd get to Walmart before I'd get the laundry done.

...I get dressed and put on at least a little lip gloss and mascara each morning.

But really, I'm usually still in pajama pants and a tank top by the time my husband is home from work. And what is mascara? I do not remember.

**************************************************************

I'm not depressed. Really. I'm just frustrated with my lack of routine, my lack of self-discipline. Friends will say, "Oh, you have the perfect little life, with your nice husband, your boy and girl, your cute little house. You're just so ORGANIZED." Ha! I have apparently perfected fooling the masses. My day to day life is a lazy, tired, unorganized mess. Utter chaos.

Is this what life is like with young kids, or do I have hope of SOMEDAY getting it together?

How to have a killer time in 24 easy steps!
Step 1: Decide that maybe two and four year olds should share a room to make space for future sibling.

Step 2: Decide that was a dumb idea...Baby can just sleep in our room indefinitely.

Step 3: Change minds again...the kids would love sleeping in the same room. Let's do it!

Step 4: Pshaw...no reason to uproot everyone. Baby's not due for five more months.

Step 5: Well, maybe we'll do bunk beds! That could be fun...and what a space-saver!

Step 6: Nevermind. We don't need any more emergency room visits when children decide to leap from top bunk.

Step 7: But wait! If they have to share a room, there may be SHOPPING (!!!) involved...kids WILL share room!

Step 8: At 7 pm on a Friday, move Garrett's bed into Laura's room. Pray for SILENCE. And sleep.

Step 9: Spend $125, and 12 hours of your Saturday, reorganizing / remodeling children's closets...if they share a room, they must share a beautiful and well organized closet as well. What's that you say? Something about obsessive compulsive behavior? I have no idea what you are speaking of.

Step 10: Admire kids' new shared room and deliciously organized closet. Ahhhhh. It is good. Behold the beauty. And the symmetry. Symmetry makes me happy.

Step 11: Laura learns to climb out of crib. Time to get her a big girl bed. What to do?

Step 12: Read Sunday paper. Find an ad for bunk beds for $197. Wooo! Go purchase bunk beds!

Step 13: At 7 pm on Monday, crazy wife demands that husband go pick up the beds already! Husband arrives home at 8 pm with one unassembled bunk bed. 8 pm is normally bedtime for the kids, but like ANYONE will be sleeping until that darn bed is ready.

Step 14: Begin to assemble beds in new shared room (Laura's old room). Shared room and BEAUTIFUL NEW CLOSET will be PERFECT once bed is in.

Step 15: Change minds at last minute and put the bed in Garrett's old room instead. Who decided that we should be trusted with real, live children????

Step 16: Husband reads assembly directions. They advise that with "two people, assembly time is approximately one hour". Rock on!

Step 17: Three and half hours, two children crashed on the couch, and thirty six swear words later, bunk beds are ready for action.

Step 18: Attempt to wake children and get their reaction to their new beds...Laura falls asleep standing up, and Garrett zonks out on the potty. We're delighted that they are so thrilled. It's awesome how hard work really pays off.

Step 19: Wake to crying two year old who has climbed to top bunk and is demanding to be rescued.

Step 20: Must go substitute teach for the day...drop kids with sitter.

Step 21: Pick up children from sitter. Explain Garrett's use of "damn" to sitter.

Step 22: Tell Daddy he needs to watch his language, even if he is trapped underneath a half built bunk bed at 11:30 pm and has lost the last two screws he needs to finish the job.

Step 23: Give "Bunk Bed Safety" lecture. For all the good it will do:

Step 24: Embark on Night Two of Project Bunk Bed / Laura's First Time Out Of a Crib. Garrett refuses to sleep in top bunk and makes himself a camp out on the floor.

I'll let Garrett and Laura sum up my feelings on the whole damn mess:
